The Janitor

Few characters in television history have garnered the same attention and popularity as The Janitor in ABC’s Scrubs. With his trademark twisted, lying, abusive personality, the Janitor garnered his popularity in the earlier seasons by pulling pranks on main character John “J.D.” Dorian using office janitorial supplies.the Janitor

Examples of some of the “pranks” the Janitor pulls includes using his squirt bottle to spray water on J.D.s crotch (giving off the impression he wet himself), filling a pie with medical diuretics, and putting ammonia in Dorian’s eyeballs.

The pranks sometimes expanded beyond the realm of the hospital, however, as the Janitor once attempted to train a wolf to attack J.D. Unfortunately, the plan back-fired when the wolf attacked the Janitor instead.

The Janitor has also made modifications to some of his office janitorial supplies so that they may better suit him in his plots and schemes. A great example is the knife-wrench (simply a wrench with a knife at the end), which he uses to his J.D. in the head with.

Like Seinfeld’s Newman, the full extent of the Janitor’s name is not known. He even refers to himself as simply “Janitor” (except on occasion when he calls himself “Dr. Ján ?tor”). A later episode reveals his nametag simply says “The Janitor.”

In the Season 8 finale, the Janitor tells J.D. that his name is Glenn Matthews. However within moments a staff member addresses him by a different name, leading the audience to question the legitimacy of “Glenn Matthews.”
